H aving conquered the world over with timekeeping instruments inspired by aviation, Bell & Ross set forth to dominate the racetracks last year by becoming the official watch partner of the Renault Sport Formula One Team.
The BR X1 RS17 watch boasts all the elements that are essential to a chronograph watch designed for race drivers, including a 45mm case crafted from Carbone Forgé, a lightweight and highly resilient material. The bezel features a tachymeter scale designed for calculating racing speeds. The dial flange is split into several hour segments, each of which has a corresponding colour for ease of reading. Even the hands are multi-coloured: the chronograph hands are yellow, the date hand is red, the small seconds hand is green and the hour hand is white and coated in Super-Luminova.
The collaboration with the French F1 team continues this year, with new limited edition chronograph watches to celebrate the partnership. Designed for racing drivers, the high-performance watches are inspired by the steering wheel of the new Renault RS 17 F1 car, with a design and colour codes that allow time to be read quickly and accurately.
The automatic calibre BR-CAL.313 powers the watch, and the sophisticated skeleton mechanism allows its gears to be admired through the grey-tinted sapphire crystal. The “rocker” type push buttons, crafted from high-tech ceramic and capped with yellow rubber for an improved grip, activate the chronograph function with great accuracy. The watch is paired with a sporty rubber and carbon fibre strap.
The BR 03-94 RS17 features a 42mm case designed to withstand shock. The case is made from matte black ceramic, which is mostly used in the brakes of racing cars because it does not heat easily. The dial is specially crafted from carbon fibre, a lightweight and highly resilient composite material used in aircraft fuselages and in bodies of racing cars, as well as the Renault F1 car’s steering wheel.
The watch ticks with the automatic calibre BR-CAL.301. The start and stop push-button of the chronograph features anodised aluminium in “Renault” yellow. This iconic colour has been used since Renault first entered Formula 1. It is also found on the internal bezel that features a tachymeter scale used to calculate the speed of a car: an indispensable function for a racing driver’s watch. Completing this watch is a strap of woven black rubber and ultra-resilient black synthetic fabric.
