Uncovering The Art Of Horology With IWC

Swiss Watch Gallery present IWC Schaffhausen ‘Discover How Masterpieces Are Engineered’, revealing the magic of watches and what makes them tick

Thursday, 1 March 2018 :  In 1868, an American watchmaker named Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen. Drawing upon the help of eminently qualified Swiss watchmakers, modern technology and hydropower sourced from the nearby River Rhine, the company began manufacturing watch movements of the highest quality.

For 150 years, IWC Schaffhausen has carved for itself a reputation for producing handcrafted mechanical timepieces with the utmost attention to detail. The name is synonymous in the world of watchmaking for its meticulous detailing, timeless design and, most importantly, its precision engineering.  In March, guests gained the opportunity to step behind the curtain to discover the fascinating world of watchmaking with Swiss Watch Gallery and IWC Schaffhausen.

The private event, ‘Discover How Masterpieces Are Engineered’, presented by Swiss Watch Gallery and IWC Schaffhausen offered guests the chance to sit down at a watchmaker’s workbench and to peer into the world of watchmaking. The event, which was held at the Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur, not only served up an exclusive fine watchmaking experience but also a showcase that reveals how IWC masterpieces are engineered.

This journey of time and horology was led by Howard Sew, Senior Watchmaker for IWC Southeast Asia. Sew has immersed himself in the world of horology and fine watchmaking since he was fifteen, learning the craft like traditional watchmakers did centuries ago learning and developing his skills through his father.

The small and intimate affair, which took place over lunch and dinner with just ten guests each, allowed Sew to share his knowledge and experience in fine watchmaking. Over the course of the event, the Senior Watchmaker revealed the complexity of mechanical watches and more importantly, the technique and mastery of an IWC calibre.

Sew, with his vast knowledge, personally took guests on this fascinating journey into the inner workings of an IWC watch. Putting on their white coats, guests not only discovered how an IWC mechanical watch movement works but also the proper usage of precision watchmaking tools. At the end of the event, guests were given certificates to commemorate the event.

The ‘Discover How Masterpieces Are Engineered’ presented by Swiss Watch Gallery and IWC Schaffhausen ended on a revelrous note over music, good food and great company.

The ‘Discover How Masterpieces Are Engineered’ event is one of the few exciting activities that Swiss Watch Gallery and IWC have lined up to commemorate the watchmaker 150th anniversary this year. Swiss Watch Gallery and IWC have a partnership, which dates back 10 years since Swiss Watch Gallery launched the first and only IWC standalone boutique at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
